For the first time in Tesoro’s history, the school is hosting a 3-on-3 basketball tournament for all students to participate and watch. Taking inspiration from high schools around the district, Tesoro ASB has decided to follow along and hold a tournament of their own.
ASB President Anson Geis, who heavily pushed to start the tournament, stated, “I want to be able to increase participation at lunchtime activities, that's one of my goals this year as ASB President. I also want it to be a fun thing for people to watch, participate in and have a good time.”
In the spring, Tesoro’s traditional dodgeball tournament is by far the biggest lunch time event and brings great participation. Many students have found interest and look forward to it every year. And with a lack of any major lunchtime activities in the fall, the idea of creating the basketball tournament before winter break stirred popularity.
Athletic Commissioner Sidney Jones and Spirit Commissioner Lily Ernst, the heads of this new event, have been working around the clock to make sure the tournament runs smoothly. Sidney expressed, “I am super excited. We have never done this before, so I'm excited to see how it turns out.”
The games will take place in the big gym at lunch starting on Nov. 4 and lasting throughout the duration of the month. There will be two games played at a time on each end of the court. The first team to reach eleven points will move on, while the other team will be eliminated. Each team will consist of three players, an alternate, and a coach. To keep the games fair, only one high school basketball player will be allowed per team.
Junior Wyatt Goodbrand, a participant in this upcoming tournament, expresses his opinion on this new event: “[t]he 3-on-3 basketball tournament is such a good idea because it gets people involved regardless of skill level”.
With this new addition to lunchtime activities, Tesoro expects to receive high participation and excitement from players and students alike in hopes of filling up the gym daily with engaged fans, creating more memories for Tesoro students and staff.
